Season 4 - Round 8 Recap - Austria

Round eight of the season would take us to Austria for one of the shorter tracks of the season. With just 10 corners for the drivers to navigate around, it's vital to stay consistent as falling out of DRS range can see you losing time to the cars ahead quite rapidly as the laps fly in.

Division 1

The main game of Austria, especially with such a tightly packed grid in D1 is staying in the DRS train and that’s largely what we saw. Those who avoided penalties would be in a good spot to gain positions on the line. AlphaTrix4809, after 6 rounds of finishing in the top two only managed to finish 5th last week which seemed like a one off but finishing P6 this week has allowed his championship Rival, NSX_Montana gain back the lead.

NSX_Montana capitalised again on AlphaTrix not being on the podium, taking his 2nd win in a row. With both drivers swapping wins for the first four rounds it was a shock to the battle when Montana failed to score any points in round 5 and it looked like it would cost him dearly. That certainly hasn’t been the case as he takes his 2nd win in a row and the championship lead by one point. On the last lap there was still no way to know how the order would stand after penalties as we saw the leader drop around 10 positions on the line due to how closely stacked the grid was. KillerBlue195 would be one of the drivers to bag some solid points, coming home in 2nd after a great drive from 12th on the grid.

For drivers who get promoted there is always that added pressure to perform and one man who was certainly looking to show he can compete with the best LoE has to offer was Excel_Gary. Gary, Last season’s division 2 champion has had a different start to the season than his winning ways of Season 3. An experienced driver such as Gary however, knows that it’s a long season and keeping your head down and focused will reward you in the end. Gary would take his first D1 podium this week after a fantastic drive from P13 to P3. The Irishman will surely be hoping to take some motivation from this as the rounds go on.

Driver of the day: Excel_Gary (P12>P3)

Division 2

In qualifying, the rain started to fall early meaning the drivers had to be out instantly and set the best lap time they could. Championship leader Mshort17 was one of few to get out quick and set a fast enough lap time to start in 2nd. He wouldn’t be there for long though as he would make the vital overtake on the first lap and carry on yet another consistent drive to take his 3rd win in a row. It’s definitely looking like its Mshort’s championship to lose as he now holds a 62 point gap at the top.

In 2nd place this week was IRO_Dylan, who failed to get out early in qualifying meaning he would start way down the order in 13th. Fantastic driving from the Dutchman would see him cut through the field and bring the car home in 2nd and a well-earned driver of the day vote. After a DNF in their debut drive, PvppetMxster2501 showed why he was placed in division 2 with a 3rd place finish, with all new drivers it will be interesting to see how he gets on.

Driver of the day: IRO_Dylan (P13>P2)

Division 3

A more straightforward race this week in D3 than what we’ve been used to seeing, with no safety car to close the grid back up it was all about which drivers would be the most consistent over the 36 laps. No surprises that it was the top three in the championship standings who would be our three drivers on the podium.

As the halfway mark of the season approaches we have another division separated by just one point for the championship lead. NSX_Jorno would come out on top this week and take the championship lead ahead of JCoL, formerly of ILRT and now driving for Excel taking 2nd after starting in 20th, an incredible drive. Rounding off the podium was another Excel driver, Mark now going back to his roots with a name change to oldskool3000, making it two 3rd place finishes in a row and a form he will be hoping to keep to get more involved in the championship battle.

Driver of the day: Excel_JCoL (P20>P2)

Division 4

An interesting race this week with a lot of mistakes throughout the field showing how easy it is to drop down the field on such a short track. Interestingly, the top 5 in the race bar one would all start in 10th or below in qualifying. Bad day on track for the championship leader, Excel_Don who is in prime position with a 39 point gap but with a DNF this week it always opens up a chance for your rivals to gain valuable points.

Taking the win this week was adrilocdoc, starting in 13th and being the only driver in the top 10 to stay penalty free to top it off. In 2nd place we had NSX_Mads and rounding out the podium spots would be TTG_Storm72. The best finish this season for all three drivers and the first points for TTG_Storm72. 4th and 5th also deserve a mention after great drives from both, mcr2712 converting p14 to p4 and California5- finishing in p5 after starting p16.

Driver of the day: adrilocdoc (P13>P1)

Division 5

Last week we saw the D5 drivers tackle the rain in the later stages of Canada and it looked like there was some who clearly favoured the conditions. This week with a full wet race for the drivers to tackle, two of those drivers would show Canada wasn’t just a one off.

A hard track to overtake in wet conditions, qualifying would prove vital as the top 3 from qualifying would go on to be our top 3 in the race. Kamkaymom153 would be the to take the top spot after a dominant drive and 3 wins in a row for the American now takes him to the top of the championship standings.

RyanB-1994, who we spoke about last week finding his form again after looking like an early favourite for the season would make it back to back podiums, doing one better from last week and finishing in 2nd. United_Bosnia, a very consistent driver this season had a rough time in the past two rounds by his standards but would be back in the top 3 this week. A driver that deserves some recognition after another consistent drive this week is DaveJaVu91. He’s yet to find himself on the podium spots but is a driver who has been solid in the race, never shy of a battle no matter what position it’s for and topping the most positions gained stat.

Driver of the day: Kamkaymom153 (P1>P1)

PC Division

A lower turnout this week and a couple of DNFs would mean all drivers would score points, the question was really who would settle for what they had and who would risk it to rise up the order. To the surprise of I think no one at this point, VSR MR. Ankka would take the win once again making it 7 wins out of 8 and a championship only he can lose.

BDG_Warren, who took the fight to VSR Mr. Ankka last week but just fell short would repeat the same this week with a fantastic last lap battle by both, separated by just 1 tenth at points but unfortunately he would fall short of the win again, although 2nd place is still a fantastic haul of points. Carrying on the theme from last week, it would be the same top 3 with Excel_Zuidema taking the final podium spot.

F2 Division

The theme of F2 all season long has been close battling and as the drivers headed to the short Austrian track, it was always going to be entertaining. Familiar faces again on the top spots of the feature race podium with the order this week being Toxic_MML, TotalPeas and Larkin_4S.

With the reverse grid setting in the sprint race, there has been issues from the front runners throughout the season as they try to battle through the pack early on in the race. Toxic would find himself dropping down the order once again, opening the door for championship leader, Larkin_4S to extend the gap. Larkin, who has looked faultless all season has capitalised at every opportunity and adds another win to their collection. With Toxic falling down the grid and TotalPeas DNFing from the race, two drivers who needed no invitation to collect a podium trophy would be Excel_Zuidema and QVR_Campbell, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
